Rory
“Rory makes you work for her affection but is extremely loyal.”
Rory is our Gypsy Cob Trotter who has Skewbald marking with black and white mane, she came to us aged 4.
Rory was born to travellers on the back yard of a council estate known to be one of the most deprived areas in Europe, at that time. Her early days were spent there and not much is known about her other than the fact she was obviously stalled, not stabled. This was obvious because when she arrived with us she would lie down and stand up on the spot so she’d obviously been used to very little space. She did not like the stable door to be closed and preferred standing out no matter what the weather.
From here she was bought by a dealer who hoped she would make nearer to 15 hands which didn’t happen. She only kept her 6 months so this young mare was starting to be passed around at quite a young age. We arrived to meet her and she had cuts around her face from some poor fencing which although treated were very sore. Broken to ride didn’t really cover her responses to someone getting on her back and it became apparent straight away that this poor horse had just had someone jump on her and kick her away.
We loaded, deciding she needed to came away from an endless life of being passed around and to have a life where she could relax a little, be started from scratch to gently break her into riding and eventually she rewarded us with her kind but feisty nature in being introduced to driving a carriage too. Rory has always had a kind eye with quite an attitude but she is a gentle soul who just likes things her own way much of the time. From a horse that shied away from headcollars, stables and limitations she has learned boundaries and limits rewarding her special person, Lydia, with hours of reciprocal interaction from the odd tickle to mutual grooming, demanding certain anatomy parts are scratched and allowing humans to lay down with her and co-regulate.
Rory likes to think she’s in charge. Before her companion, Holly, arrived on the scene Rory had been alone for some months after a livery horse left our stables. She is very possessive of food resources and will chase others away but at times she’s playful and appreciative of their friendship.
